Judith Shapiro – Understanding and Intervening in Academic Procrastination
09.11.2021 @ 18:30 - 19:30
On November 9, 18:30-19:30 GMT, we are delighted to be hosting Dr Judith Shapiro, senior lecturer and Departmental Tutor in the LSE Department of Economics, with her insights on academic procrastination.
Everyone is invited for an in-person event in New Academic Building Thai Theatre, which will be followed with time for informal conversations and snacks.
“Procrastination is the action of unnecessarily and voluntarily delaying or postponing something despite knowing that there will be negative consequences for doing so,” Wikipedia informs us. Why are the great majority of us guilty of it? What interventions might work?
In this Economics Department project, students will join as partners in a review of the field of academic procrastination. We aim to submit a contribution to the conference of the Association for Field Experiments in Chicago in June. This Sen Club presentation will survey the field in the context of behavioural economics and link it to Dr Shapiro’s past work on Russian mortality and stress. She will explain how students can join, with varying degrees of commitment. Those attending will get a chance to test out one such scale on themselves and consider what they think about its validity.
